“The Black Pearl!”

A charming slice of postwar funny-animal fun from DC, this 1946 issue spotlights Presto Pete — a magician rabbit in top hat and cape — consulting his "Hindu Rope Tricks" book while playing a horn, having apparently levitated a very unhappy turbaned duck high into the air above an exotic skyline. The bewildered duck's plea — "Okay okay! Your rope trick got me UP here — now get me DOWN!" — sets a perfectly playful tone for the whole package, and Ed Dunn's cover art delivers the gag with crisp, expressive energy. At ten cents, Animal Antics #2 is a delightful window into DC's lighter side during the golden age of comics.
