André van Duin #1 (1987, Land Productions) marks the first collected album edition of cartoonist Toon van Driel's daily celebrity comic strip 'Van Duin & Zo,' which debuted in the major Dutch national newspaper De Telegraaf in 1987 and ran there for nearly two decades. It stands as the definitive comics treatment of André van Duin — one of the most recognizable entertainers in the Netherlands — distinguishing itself from earlier, less successful attempts at the subject by featuring the direct creative involvement of Van Duin himself. The strip grew out of a synergy between Van Driel and the comedian himself — unlike the brief, unsuccessful 1975–1976 gag comic 'André' by Fred Julsing, and unlike Belgian artists Dirk Stallaert and Patrick Vermeir who abandoned a Van Duin project in 1984, Van Driel secured actual participation from André van Duin (legally Adrianus Marinus Kyvon), who is credited as co-writer under that name in the album's credits. Ray Nicholson served as Van Driel's artistic assistant on the strip, as he did on several of Van Driel's concurrent series. Land Productions — Van Driel's own publishing imprint, which since 1986 handled his non-Knudde comics — published the 48-page album, giving Van Driel full control over the material.
