Nancy Burns's group organizes a "teach-in" on the public school grounds, and turns out in force for the library board meeting. The board president gives pro-Apathea speakers preference, since anti-Apathea speakers dominated the previous meeting. Parents and children alike support the books; Neil speaks eloquently on their value, and on what they have meant to him and Danny. Despite an angry explosion by Mrs. Burns, the vote is 3-2 to keep the books, and Mrs. Barton sharply rebukes Mrs. Burns. In the story within a story, Grimhilder takes dragon form to attack Apathea.
