During the Japanese-Chinese war, Kotnis and four other Indian doctors are sent to the battlefields in China to tend to the wounded soldiers. Kotnis stays in China tending to the troops of the Eight Route Army and training other doctors after his colleagues depart. He marries Kuo Chong Lan but dies six months after his son, In-Hua, is born.
