All-New X-Factor #7
All-New X-Factor #7 marks the debut of Georgia Dakei, a young mutant whose power of moisture absorption through touch would evolve into the recurring character Decay — one of the few genuinely new additions to the Marvel mutant roster during this corporate-sponsored era of X-Factor. The issue is the opening chapter of the 'Change of Decay' arc and delivers the series' most consequential character moment to that point: Cypher, the team's most emotionally fragile member, is apparently killed by the very person he was trying to save, instantly raising the moral stakes of what it means for a corporate super-team to intervene in civilian lives. Peter David uses the premise — an outspoken anti-mutant leader secretly raising a mutant daughter — to reflect on themes of bigotry, paternalism, and the limits of heroic authority, giving the book a social dimension that distinguishes it from most of its All-New Marvel NOW! contemporaries. The issue also introduces Scott Dakei and his enforcer Orville, both making their first Marvel Universe appearances.

All-New X-Factor launched in January 2014 as part of Marvel's All-New Marvel NOW! initiative, announced at New York Comic Con in October 2013, and represented Peter David's return to the X-Factor title he had helmed in two earlier celebrated runs — a notable creative comeback, as David had suffered a stroke shortly before his previous X-Factor series concluded in late 2013. Issue #7 is the first installment of the book's second story arc and maintains the creative team that carried the debut arc: writer Peter David, interior artist and cover penciler Carmine Di Giandomenico, colorist Lee Loughridge, and letterer Cory Petit, with Jordan D. White as editor and Axel Alonso as Editor-in-Chief. The series operated under the conceit of a corporate-sponsored X-Factor funded by the fictional Serval Industries, a sharp structural contrast to the noir-inflected detective agency format of David's previous X-Factor Investigations run.
