Philippe Jarbinet's Airborne 44 returns with a chapter titled "Omaha Beach," and the cover sets the tone with quiet, almost mournful intensity — a battle-worn American soldier stands in the foreground, rifle in hand, against a backdrop of landing craft and the steel beach obstacles that made that stretch of Normandy so deadly. A helmet resting on the bloodstained sand at his feet speaks volumes without a word of dialogue. This 2011 Casterman volume is a beautifully rendered tribute to the soldiers who fought there, rendered entirely by Jarbinet's own hand from pencils to color.
