Volume 12 of Kengo Hanazawa's I Am a Hero arrives with one of the series' most unsettling cover images: a human figure whose body has been almost entirely overtaken by dense green vines, moss, and foliage, standing on what appears to be a bridge in a greyed-out urban landscape. The contrast between the lush, living plant growth and the implied human form beneath it captures the manga's eerie fusion of the organic and the grotesque. Hanazawa's meticulous draftsmanship is on full display here, making this volume impossible to set down unexamined.
