“Building the Army”

The second chapter of this six-part Marvel limited series keeps the intrigue running high, with a cover by Tomm Coker that sets a distinctly noir mood — a gorilla in a pinstripe shirt grips firearms while fragmented faces loom in the background, all anchored by a globe and a whiskey bottle that suggest globe-trotting mystery and shadowy dealings. Writer Jeff Parker and artist Leonard Kirk continue their "Building the Army" story with a creative team that clearly has a strong handle on blending retro-espionage atmosphere with genuine character. It's a compelling package for anyone drawn to Marvel's more unconventional corners.
