“I Saw the Vampire”

A terrific piece of mid-1950s Atlas horror atmosphere, this June 1954 issue of Adventures into Weird Worlds features a cover by Carl Burgos that does exactly what great horror art should — it makes your skin crawl through suggestion rather than spectacle. A hunched, wide-eyed man cowers in the foreground while behind him a shadowy, hat-wearing figure sits silently in an armchair, its ghostly blue presence filling the room with dread. Teasing the lead story "The Impatient Ghost," this issue is a fine example of the understated, shadow-drenched storytelling that made Atlas's horror line such a pleasure in 1954.
