“Caitiff: First of the Vampires!”

That cover does the job immediately — a massive, grotesque vampire face fills the frame, its enormous bloodshot eye reflecting a fist-cocked Superman flying straight toward the viewer, while rows of jagged fangs leer along the bottom edge. The tagline "Caitiff, The First Vampire!" promises a villain of ancient and unsettling menace for the Man of Steel to contend with. Cover pencils by Keith Giffen and inks by Karl Kesel make this March 1986 issue a genuinely striking piece of mid-80s DC horror-superhero storytelling.
