By 2005, 2000 AD was operating under Rebellion Developments, which had owned the title since 2000 and was actively shepherding both returning classic characters and brand-new strips. Pat Mills—the founding editor of 2000 AD and the original creator of Bill Savage in the very first prog of Invasion! (progs 1–51)—scripted 'Out of Order' with artist Charlie Adlard, whose gritty linework suited the strip's resistance-fighter tone. The Leatherjack strip, attributed in the 2000 AD story index to prog 1450 as its launch point, belongs to the tradition of John Smith's idiosyncratic, countercultural thrillers that the anthology championed through the 1990s and into the 2000s.
