“Death Line”

Programme 12 of 2000 AD arrives dated 14 May 1977, and Mike Western's cover makes an immediate impression — the green-skinned, oversized-craniumed Mekon crouches atop his signature saucer-craft emblazoned with a bold "M," arms folded with cold authority against a blazing red circle, while a pair of battered spacecraft drift in the background. The tagline blazing across the bottom — "I am Mekon, the supreme being… I have no fear… no feelings… no limit to my powers!" — sets the tone for what promises to be a suitably menacing Dan Dare adventure inside. For anyone who picked this up off a British newsstand in 1977, that cover alone was more than enough reason to part with 8p Earth Money.
