In a desolate, postapocalyptic world, the lone survivor Solo hunts giant rats for food when he stumbles into an ancient temple shaped like an Egyptian sphinx. There, by accident, he awakens Nefer, a forgotten pharaoh of the Nile and wife of Amón, a star-born god whose return is foretold as the key to saving the world.

In a distant past, two warring human tribes fight under the banners of opposing gods, their blood feeding a monstrous entity—a vast fetal god sustained by sacrifice. When a mysterious spaceship begins collecting the dead, a man and a woman, the last survivors of the conflict, follow it to the heart of the "factory of divinity," where they confront the source of their world’s terror.
