This 1909 Christmas issue of The Cavalier contains serialized and short fiction alongside advertisements and poetry. The featured serial "The Paddington Case" by Alfred L. Donaldson presents a murder mystery: an American businessman discovers his traveling companion shot dead in a railway compartment at Paddington Station, with a bullet wound to the back of the neck. Awakening from sleep, the American realizes he is the only witness and circumstances point toward him as suspect. Facing obligations in New York—an imminent international business deal and a postponed wedding—he decides to flee rather than face detention. He escapes through a window, leaving behind his identifying bag. Other contents include short stories by authors including H. Rider Haggard and Theodore Roberts, poetry, and period advertisements for the Loftis jewelry credit system and the American School of Correspondence.
Each page has its own page — the cartoon, who’s in it, and what the satire means.
