"Poor Pirates!" by George Allan England presents a complete novelette set aboard the yacht Vagabond, bound for the Dry Tortugas. Banker Langdon Minot travels with his daughter Judith, a tutor and his wife, Roger Hull (a charming newcomer), and Brent Van Kleek (who hopes to marry Judith for her money). Upon reaching the abandoned Fort Jefferson on Garden Key, the passengers explore the massive hexagonal fortress, originally a prison for political offenders like Dr. Samuel Mudd. Hull escorts the eager Judith through the decaying fortifications, discovering the dark cisterns beneath. As they investigate the mysterious depths—repositories for potential treasure—the story builds toward complications hinted by undercurrents of romantic jealousy and attraction among the younger passengers amid the isolated, historic locale.
Each page has its own page — the cartoon, who’s in it, and what the satire means.
