This complete novelette by Alice Rix, titled "The Snob Splendid," presents an international romance set in California's Mendocino Mountains. The narrative follows Carew Drummond, a snobbish young Englishman who arrives to visit his father's old friend, rancher Old Battle. Drummond's affected manner—particularly his pedantic corrections about his surname pronunciation—immediately antagonizes Old Battle's spirited daughter, Cynthia. However, Drummond wins respect by expertly handling a chestnut horse. When Cynthia's mare bolts after encountering an Native American woman on a treacherous mountain road, Drummond gallantly pursues on horseback to prevent disaster. Old Battle, moved by memories of Drummond's father once saving his life, expresses hope the young visitor will become close with his daughter.
