"Country Love," a serialized story by Hulbert Footner, centers on Eve Allinson, a twenty-year-old stage star of the musical comedy "Maythorn" at New York's Continental Theater. Recently elevated from the chorus, she has become a sensation through an irresistible charm and beauty that captivates audiences. Behind her success lies Brutus Tawney, a wealthy magnate bankrolling her career through manager Maurice Gibbon. The narrative follows Eve's closing-night performance and subsequent private party, where she is attended by four suitors—Schuyler Beekman, Wardour Crane, Harry Van Brocklin, and Everett Clough—all curiously composed in her presence. Her companion Mrs. Cora Kittson (her aunt in name only) carefully guards her access. Young Clough alone shows genuine emotion, troubled by unseen implications. Tawney hosts Eve at his hotel suite, presenting her to distinguished guests including a Spanish novelist and dramatic critic. The narrative examines the tensions beneath Eve's triumphant public persona—questions of financial dependency, romantic complication, and the cost of her meteoric rise.
