Louis Joseph Vance's serialized novel "Beau Revel: A Scintillant Novel of Manhattan's Mad Gaiety" opens this issue, illustrated by Lester Ralph. The story follows Larry Revel, a sophisticated forty-five-year-old bachelor and renowned ladies' man, as he pursues Alice Lathom, a thirty-year-old married woman, in the upscale Manhattan nightclub scene of 1919. During an evening at the Crystal Room, Revel presses Alice to leave her unsatisfactory husband Frank and marry him, declaring his devotion accumulated over ten months of courtship. Alice remains coquettish and uncommitted, suggesting Revel's reputation for inconstancy makes his sincerity doubtful. Later that night, Revel joins acquaintances Drummond Hale and the Morley brothers at Nelly Steele's, a newly fashionable supper club disguised within a converted stable on Fifty-Sixth Street, to observe the establishment's celebrated danseuse.
