"The Sea Bride" by Ben Ames Williams is a serialized romance adventure continuing from February. Captain Noll Wing of the whaling ship Sally Sims marries Faith Kilcup, though she is also loved by second mate Dan'l Tobey. On their South Seas honeymoon cruise, Noll deteriorates through drink and age, while Dan'l grows jealous. When Noll brutally kicks crewman Mauger, the terrified sailor vows revenge, haunting Noll's conscience. Noll's slackened discipline leads to tragedy when a whale-boat crew is nearly lost at sea for three days with contaminated water, killing two men. The Sally anchors at a lush tropical island. Noll refuses to go ashore, but Faith persuades mate Ham to take her, eager for land and flowers, to explore the woods while the crew conducts business with the natives. The narrative breaks off as she ventures into the island interior.
