This serialized domestic novel by an unnamed author follows two Scottish girls, Alison and Jessie, newly arrived in London to stay with their uncle John Harbuckle in Tower Hill. The chapter opens with Alison awakening to the noise of fish-carts rattling toward Billingsgate market. Gazing from her window at the Tower of London, Alison becomes emotionally absorbed in the historical weight of the structure, reflecting on Lady Jane Grey, the princes, and other historical figures executed within its walls. Jessie receives an affectionate letter from Mac Carruthers back in Scotland, expressing his loneliness and promising good news soon. Mrs. Bayliss, their widowed mother, arrives at breakfast deeply unhappy about returning to her childhood home, which she resented since her wedding day. Uncle John attempts to make the household comfortable, offering the girls Florentine chests and historical guidance, while the narrative establishes the emotional tenor of the household and hints at developing relationships.
