This excerpt is Chapter IX of "Peace with Honour" by Sydney C. Grier, a serial installment from The Argosy. The chapter depicts a riot in an unnamed Ethiopian city where the British Mission, led by Sir Dugald, defends its compound and flag against a mob incited by the Grand Vizier's steward and a theological student. Fitz Anstruther and interpreter Kustendjian return from the bazaar to warn of the approaching crowd. Sir Dugald calmly directs his men to arm themselves with whips and canes rather than firearms, positioning them to defend the flag-staff. The mob attacks but is repelled through disciplined hand-to-hand combat without bloodshed. Afterward, the Vizier arrives to apologize, attributing the riot to zealous subordinates influenced by religious fervor during Ramadan. Sir Dugald demands punishment and accepts the Vizier's explanations while maintaining dignity regarding the treaty negotiations.
