This issue of The Argos (December 1891, Vol. LII) contains chapters XLIV-XLV of "The Fate of the Hara Diamond," a serialized mystery novel. Chapter XLIV depicts the arrival of detective Mr. Solomon Madgin at Deepley Walls mansion with the recovered Great Hara Diamond—a precious gem belonging to the recently deceased son of Lady Chillington, whose recovery has been his mission. The narrative details Janet's emotional burden of attending the demanding, insomniac Lady Chillington while grieving her mother's death, and her anxiety over an unknown father's potential appearance. Upon receiving Madgin's telegram confirming success, Lady Chillington undergoes an elaborate transformation, later receiving the diamond in its Byzantine casket with profound emotion and offering Madgin her friendship along with monetary compensation. Chapter XLV shows her subsequent exhaustion and obsessive behavior, clutching the diamond while confined to bed, her excitement collapsed into nervous prostration.
