This issue of The Argos from July 1886 contains the serialized novel "Lady Valeria," here showing Chapters XXIV-XXV. Edric Poynter, a young military officer, encounters Elsie at a seaside town (Folkestone), where she desperately begs him to leave the area, claiming that three recurring nightmares have shown her his death within seven days. Elsie refuses to reveal her source but insists something dangerous threatens him. Edric dismisses her premonitions, citing duty to his regiment and an upcoming deployment to Egypt. Later that evening, while walking near the pier under moonlight, a woman identifying herself as Lady Charles Brant approaches Edric, asking him to visit her mother, Lady Valeria Meynell, who has recognized him from earlier in the day.
Each page has its own page — the cartoon, who’s in it, and what the satire means.
