This February 1886 issue of Lady Valeria includes Chapter 9 of "Wizard's Gold," a serialized romantic narrative by unnamed author(s). Protagonist Edric Poynter, a military officer, awakens from a dream recalling his encounter with the mysterious Mrs. Damien, who provided him supernatural guidance to meet society figures including the widow Mrs. Damien and younger woman Elsie Paramount. Edric travels to London and calls on the Archdale family, where he unexpectedly meets their daughter Hester, an artistic and spirited young woman painting a scene from The Lay of the Last Minstrel featuring their bloodhound Cuss (publicly named Roswal). The two form immediate rapport discussing military regiment affairs. When Hester asks Edric about his presence at St. Fridolin's church, he reveals his full story, trusting her judgment and discretion.
