May 1883 This serial installment continues the emotional and moral conflict of the novel "Winifred Power." After Winifred publicly accuses Sir John Hatherley of wrongdoing regarding a trial involving the servant Martha, she faces family ostracism. Mark Hatherley, Sir John's son and Winifred's romantic interest, visits her studio attempting to reconcile her with his father, presenting newspaper accounts of the trial. Winifred refuses to yield, maintaining her conviction based on accounts from acquaintance Miss Freake, Martha's behavior, and a deathbed statement from someone named Ridgeley. Mark, torn between wounded pride and affection, urges her to delay her final decision, but Winifred definitively refuses him. Mrs. Chandos-Fane, her mother, attempts reconciliation; Sir John responds with dignified magnanimity. Meanwhile, the curious Mrs. Hatherley probes Winifred's knowledge of Sir John's past. The narrative notes that weeks pass with Winifred isolated while Gertrude gains influence over Sir John at The Limes.
