"Called to the Rescue," Chapter XVI: "A New Friend" continues a serialized narrative from June 1879. Paul Rocket, servant to Ernest Archdale, pursues Professor Cosmo Dangerfield and Emily Stormount across snowy terrain. Paul employs coded messages and resourceful tactics—jumping aboard a coach, using a circus trick to trip the Professor at a railway junction—to protect young Emily after she becomes separated from her guardian. Separated from Paul, Emily stumbles into a grand house hosting a social gathering and falls asleep on a cloak. She is discovered by an elderly woman, Mrs. Raymond, who recognizes Emily as a friend of her daughter and offers shelter. Paul arrives shortly after. Mrs. Raymond reveals herself as the grandmother of Ernest Archdale, Emily's benefactor, and offers her carriage to convey them home, establishing a connection between the scattered characters through unexpected social encounter.
