This serialized Victorian novel (Chapter XXXI) centers on Eleanor Lloyd's shocking discovery of her true origins. Olive Deane arrives at Stammars estate bearing news from the ailing Mr. Kelvin: documents in the late Jacob Lloyd's handwriting prove that Eleanor is not his biological daughter but an adopted child of unknown parentage. Consequently, she has no claim to Lloyd's estate, which passes to his nephew Gerald Warburton. Eleanor is devastated, mourning the loss of her father and her identity. Lady Dudgeon, her patroness, responds protectively, engaging her solicitor Mr. Barclay to investigate. Meanwhile, Gerald Pomeroy harbors concealed love for Eleanor, maintaining cold distance while awaiting news from Marhyddoc that may vindicate him and resolve the situation. The narrative interweaves Eleanor's emotional turmoil with Gerald's internal conflict regarding his earlier deception and current feelings.
