This issue contains Chapter XXV ("An Ignominious Exit") of the serial novel Anne Hereford, by the author of East Lynne. In this chapter, multiple deaths and revelations converge. Mr. Chandos learns his brother George has died overnight; simultaneously, word arrives from India that his brother Sir Thomas has fallen in battle. These deaths elevate Chandos to baronetcy. Meanwhile, the character Mrs. Penn is arrested by police, their search of her boxes revealing skeleton keys, anonymous letters, and a grey cloak. She admits to having infiltrated the household seeking George Heneage's whereabouts, stealing Mr. Chandos's memorandum-book, framing the protagonist, and intercepting correspondence. She also confesses to the mysterious incident where she startled Mr. Chandos's horse in the avenue, having mistaken him for George in the dim light. The narrative intricately weaves domestic intrigue, family tragedy, and mystery resolution.
