The Argosy, September 1, 1868. By the author of East Lynne. Chapter XIX continues this domestic Gothic serial. Set in autumn at Chandos estate, Anne Hereford—companion to the household—finds contentment with the injured Mr. Chandos, though his mother Lady Chandos remains mysteriously ill. A letter addressed to an agent mysteriously disappears from the hall table where Anne placed it, witnessed by servants including Lizzy Dene. Mrs. Penn hints at suspicions regarding an unnamed household member, later suggesting Lady Chandos may be insane. Anne suspects Lizzy Dene of the theft but Chandos defends her. The chapter culminates in Anne glimpsing an unknown man's face peering through the parlor window at night—a second such occurrence. Chandos pursues the intruder, injuring his hand on broken glass, but finds no one. The mystery deepens regarding both household theft and external threats.
