A mysterious male figure—possibly Edwin Barley—appears near the house, watching the windows. Late that night, Anne is awakened by Mrs. Chandos's distressed cries in the gallery. The narrator witnesses Mr. Chandos comforting his wife while Lady Chandos expresses alarm about maintaining secrecy and protecting the household's reputation. The chapter concludes with Mr. Chandos emerging fully dressed, appearing gravely anxious as he dismisses a servant, suggesting deeper domestic turmoil and hidden complications.
