The page shown is typeset in clean Victorian letterpress, no illustrated cover painting — just authoritative serif headers, a dateline, and the opening of Anne Hereford, Chapter V, attributed to 'the Author of East Lynne' (Ellen Wood). This pre-pulp literary magazine, sold cheaply to a mass readership, helped establish the model of serialized genre fiction — sensation novels, domestic mysteries, gothic melodrama — that American wood-pulp publishers later industrialized into the dime-novel and pulp formats that directly fed the comic book's DNA.
