In Tubb's opening installment, psych-policeman Jay West observes a trial aboard a generation ship 300 years into its journey toward Pollux. A young gardener named Goodwin faces execution for allegedly wasting plant trimmings—a capital crime aboard the overcrowded vessel where resources are strictly rationed. West suspects the accuser, elder gardener Johnson, may have framed the youth out of jealousy. West is called away to investigate a death on level nineteen. The issue also features shorter works by Arthur Coster, Alan Barclay, John Brunner, Phillip Martyn, R.H. Godfrey, and Kenneth Bulmer. A nonfiction article by John Newman examines "Food of the Future," while film critic John Cornell reviews Paramount's Conquest of Space, praising its technical accuracy regarding space stations and Martian travel.
