New Worlds Science Fiction, Vol. 2, No. 33 (March 1958) This British science fiction magazine contains a novelette and four short stories. "The Star Walk" by James White (illustrated by Quinn) depicts a courier ship pilot named Carmichael on a colony world who rashly brings his girlfriend Evelyn to meet an incoming C-ship captain during a mail exchange run. The C-man's vessel, landing in desolate terrain, reacts with extreme suspicion to finding two passengers instead of one, firing a heat beam in warning. As Carlsen threatens interrogation from his ship, Carmichael becomes alarmed by the captain's increasingly slurred, artificial-sounding voice—suspiciously unlike the Carlsen he knew. The other stories are "Manna" by John Christopher, "Logical Deduction" by Gavin Neal, "The Veterans" by Norman Dale, and "The Active Man" by Sydney J. Bounds. An editorial discusses science fiction's transition from magazine serialization to hardcover respectability through major British and American publishers.
