About this issue

Nebula, Issue Number Eleven, features "The Yupe" by Charles Eric Maine (novelette, pp. 3-25), an SF story about a mysterious metallic artifact discovered on Brierley Common. The object—approximately six inches wide and a foot tall, weighing a quarter-ton, and composed of unidentifiable, super-hard metal—exhibits radioactivity, an internal rotating mechanism, and faint mechanical sounds detectable only through amplification. Scientists at a Ministry of Supply Research Centre attempt unsuccessfully to analyze its purpose and composition through x-ray, chemical, thermal, and metallurgical analysis. The narrative follows researchers Carson, Blake, and Blarney as they investigate the artifact's origins and attempt to open it. The issue also contains short stories by Bob Shaw, Eric Frank Russell, Harry Warner Jr., John Christopher, and Cyril Myrescough, plus feature articles on science fiction film and reader correspondence.
