Issue 9 (August 1954) of Nebula Science Fiction, a British bi-monthly edited by Peter Hamilton, features three substantial fiction works. The lead novel is E. C. Tubb's Project One, centered on an unidentified threat of sudden death on Earth. Robert A. Heinlein's novelette Ordeal in Space follows a former spaceman battling severe acrophobia after a traumatic incident aboard the starship Valkyrie; attempting anonymity under an assumed name, he struggles to rebuild his life in New York working calibrating electronics while haunted by memories of Mars, Venus, and other celestial bodies.
