About this issue

This serialized drama, set in southern California's foothills, follows interlocking stories among neighboring ranches. Grace Evans leaves her home and fiancé Custer Pennington to pursue a motion-picture acting career in Hollywood, driven by ambitions Pennington doubts. Meanwhile, Custer's sister Eva is engaged to Grace's brother Guy, whose financial schemes entangle him with Slick Allen, a discharged ranch hand trafficking stolen whisky. In Los Angeles, Gaza de Lure, daughter of neighbor Mrs. Burke, works in film; an actor-director named Wilson Crumb treacherously addicts her to morphine. The excerpt shows the Pennington household grappling with Grace's departure and its emotional toll on Custer, who fears she will never return. His parents harbor concerns about his recent drinking and melancholy.
