About this issue

The Girl from Hollywood (continued serial), by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Chapter XXVII presents a Prohibition-era drama involving a wrongly convicted bootlegger, Custer Pennington, sentenced to six months in jail despite circumstantial evidence. His friend Shannon withdraws from the family due to guilt over her hidden knowledge of his innocence. Meanwhile, film director Wilson Crumb methodically seduces and addicts an extra actress named Grace Evans to cocaine, manipulating her into distributing his narcotic stockpile. When Crumb discovers from a newspaper that Custer—Grace's childhood acquaintance from Ganado—has been imprisoned, he reveals that Grace's own brother is actually responsible for bootlegging operations, creating blackmail leverage over the increasingly drug-dependent girl.
