This inaugural issue of HI-LIFE, a men's magazine edited by Chad Kelly, collects fiction, pictorials, and departmental features. William Saroyan's "Earth, Day, Night, Self" presents a fragmented, philosophical narrative following a man from childhood through encounters with language, schooling, and human connection, culminating in memories of his mother and sea imagery. Hallos Hunter's "Baker's Dozen" offers satirical comedy about a bank teller whose pin-up calendar triggers a violent response from colleague Floyd Baker, who then recounts his Pacific theater war experiences: wounded in combat, he boards a stateside hospital ship carrying six attractive army nurses, mentally cataloging their appearances and backgrounds. Additional content includes Kim Novak pictorials, jazz commentary, sports writing, automobile showcases, satirical pieces, film previews, and travel pieces on foreign islands. Guy de Maupassant's "Madame Teuier's Excursion" is reprinted as a classic.
Each page has its own page — the cartoon, who’s in it, and what the satire means.
