About this issue

This issue of Future Science Fiction (No. 38, August 1958, 35¢) contains five science fiction stories and a nonfiction article. The featured novelet is T.H. Mathieu's "The Earthquake Remedy," concerning Earthmen colonizing an alien world who encounter problems when attempting to eliminate a small creature whose bite proves fatal to humans. A.B. Chandler's "The Song" opens the issue, describing ten ships that have mysteriously vanished in the Asteroid Belt; the cargo ship Thunderchild becomes the eleventh when strange phenomena suddenly affect all aboard. Kate Wilhelm's "The Last Threshold" concerns Peter Wainwright, who periodically vanishes entirely. "Object Lesson" by Carl Greener (illustrated on the cover) deals with winning warfare through strategic planning. Richard Embs contributes "Texas in the Sky," exploring oil reserves on Venus. Isaac Asimov provides the nonfiction feature "Point of View: Mercury," describing what an observer would actually see from Mercury's surface.
