This October 1955 issue of Famous Western features five Western stories. The lead novel, "Slap Leather, Pilgrim" by Ruel McDaniel, concerns Tad East, a taciturn hired hand willing to perform his duties but unafraid to express opinions on the cattle-versus-sheep conflict roiling the region—and willing to aid wounded men from either side. "Rowan Woman" by Burt Arthur is a novelet about Mary Rowan, determined to defend her family's honor through combat. Four short stories follow: Harold Gluck's "Digger John's Big Freeze," exploring an ethical dilemma when a cold-blooded murderer had once saved Digger John's life; "What's Your Business?" by Helene Huff, in which Slim's frequent absences and apparent fugitive status puzzle others; William Richards' "Short Cut to a Showdown," about Frank assisting an elderly man; and Mat Rand's "Yellow Dog, Red Courage," concerning Yank earning his new master's respect. The issue contains advertisements for vocational training and writing instruction courses.
