About this issue

"La leyenda negra" by Burton Hare is a Spanish-language crime thriller set in a medieval Yugoslav castle. Three criminals—Skruda, Bickert, and Darkin—arrive at an isolated fortress to conduct an unspecified illegal operation (referenced cryptically as an "alijo" or smuggling shipment). Local legend warns of supernatural activity called "La Leyenda Negra" (The Black Legend), though the men dismiss superstitious fears. The castle features dungeons with medieval torture equipment. After the first night, mysterious sounds emanate from the basement—scraping, guttural voices, and strange odors. A sealed rock in the torture chamber begins shifting; something emerges with glowing red eyes and nauseating stench. The narrative follows the criminals' arrival and Darkin's preparation of the fortress, interspersed with hints of malevolent presence in the depths below. Bickert, a cold-blooded killer accustomed to violence, finds himself uneasily disturbed.
