The narrative exposes her as a sadist who brutally tortures residents through flogging and imprisonment. When orphan Annie Beaumont attempts escape, Lady Beswick interrogates her roommate Mabel with a leather whip, then summons her enforcer Sykes—a gaunt, scarred man wielding a three-corded whip embedded with metal spikes—to torture the girl savagely. Lady Beswick instructs Sykes to hunt down Annie and kill her while staging it as accidental death by drowning or fall. A neighboring resident, Sabrina Cole, hears Mabel's agonized screams through the walls, realizing the establishment's true horrors.
