The story opens with photographer Nancy Kennedy arriving at a remote Louisiana motel en route to photograph rare flowers at Peonia National Park. At the motel bar, a woman named Mrs. MacCarthy befriends her and persuades her to serve as a witness to a wedding at a nearby chapel. Nancy attends the ceremony only to witness the bride suddenly produce a knife and brutally murder the groom while MacCarthy laughs maniacally. Trapped inside and attempting escape through a window, Nancy is confronted by mysterious large white hands reaching through the broken glass. The narrative builds horror through claustrophobic setting and sudden violence, establishing Nancy as an innocent protagonist caught in an inexplicable nightmare scenario.
