Arriving during fog and drizzle, he witnesses a public vampire execution: townspeople led by a tall, pale man named Weissen drive a stake through a white-shrouded female vampire in her coffin, producing screams and blue vapor. The village priest, Father Franz, protests the ceremony as devil-worship; moments later, Spencer finds the priest dead below the church bell tower, though no one had been ringing the bells. Spencer abandons his journey and recounts these events to his uncle, Professor Daniel Vinceton, seeking rational explanation for the impossible occurrences—particularly the mysteriously self-ringing bell and the priest's unexplained death.
