The story shifts to present-day negotiations between debt-ridden Richard Weston and creditor Norrie Heoghill over the estate, with Weston proposing a revised settlement. A parallel narrative introduces Percy Kallenby, a gambler at a rigged casino who experiences unexpected luck at the roulette wheel, assisted by an attractive female croupier.
