The venue specializes in sensational melodramas and variety acts, including "The Night of the Murdering Lady," performances by the burlesque dancer Marjorie Maxwell with deformed dwarfs, and "Doctor Mystery" with a large python named "Killer" manipulated alongside the redheaded French performer Yvonne Durand. Young actress Opale Bentley has recently been promoted from apprentice to supporting player after her predecessor's fatal accident. On a December evening in 1885, while leaving after a performance, Opale discovers a corpse hanging inverted from the stage rigging, drenched in dried blood. The discovery triggers a sequence of real tragedies at the theater, contrasting sharply with the staged horrors typically performed there.
