The narrative opens with the sudden, violent death of wealthy Howard Rhodes, whose corpse lies in his coffin while his widow Selena maintains appearances before the townspeople who gossip about Rhodes's gambling debts, drinking, and alleged affair with the beautiful Susan Bingham. The hearse driver Marius Fitzgerald, a cheerful drunkard indifferent to death, transported all three victims to the cemetery.
