The campaign ends disastrously when Indians breach their encampment and scatter the militia, killing many. Kingman survives by hiding and discovers the renegade Johnson nearby. A secondary narrative follows Pompey's deliberations about joining the militia effort. The story blends frontier action, character development, and period settlement themes.
