About this issue

This issue contains the opening installment of "Silver-Mask's Clew" by J. C. Cowdrick, a western adventure serial. The story establishes Golden-Egg, a booming New Mexico mining town founded after prospectors Raymond Wilmont and Joe Garret discover an extraordinarily rich gold mine. Major Tom Wilmont, Raymond's uncle, invests capital to operate the claim with modern machinery. The narrative shifts to Tuesday evening when the weekly mail coach from Las Vegas is three hours overdue. The mysterious arrival of Cooney Clay, an eccentric elderly prospector riding an enormous horse named Barnum, brings news that he passed the coach earlier. While townspeople gather at the Palace Royal hotel, the coach remains missing. Chapter Two reveals the passengers: Major Wilmont rides with driver Double Jimmie, while his sister, daughter, and a colored maidservant ride inside. Unknown to those awaiting in town, the coach has been delayed—the chapter's conclusion suggests road agents may be responsible.
