About this issue

By E. L. Wheeler (author of the Deadwood Dick novels), this Western serial depicts Parson Jim Priggins's arrival in the mining country, where he encounters 'Liza Jane, a nineteen-year-old girl working gold claims alone in Dragon Gulch. The parson, recently departed from Vermont to visit his Uncle Colonel Hank Wetherill, is persuaded by 'Liza Jane to attend a wedding that evening at the Wetherill mansion. She agrees to guide him on two conditions: she may secretly explore the house during the ceremony, and Priggins must perform the marriage rite himself instead of Squire Hines. 'Liza Jane speaks of a mysterious phantom creature—Don Dragon, a scaled, winged monster ridden by a ghostly white figure—that haunts the gulch. The narrative follows their journey toward Pokerville as a storm approaches.
